Laskaridis Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The surname Laskaridis is a modern Anatolian Greek variant of the Byzantine surname Laskaris and traces back to the Byzantine Empire and is most commonly believed to derive from the Persian word lashkarī, meaning 'soldier' or 'warrior.' (This interpretation however is open to question as the earliest Laskaris were simple farmers)

It was borne by a prominent Byzantine noble family, including rulers of the Empire of Nicaea, and appears in records as early as 1059.

An alternative theory connects the name to the ancient Greek verb lasko, meaning 'to call out' or 'to communicate,' suggesting that Laskaris may have originally meant 'the speaker' or 'preacher.' Another possibility links it to the Italian verb lasciare ('to loosen' or 'to allow'). Mispronunciations by Latin speakers may have led to forms like lascare and eventually Laskaris, perhaps referring to someone who loosened ropes—such as a sailor—or someone with the authority to permit action.
