From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname takes the form 'Laitties of y' Ilk' in Workman's MS. (a heraldic MS. dated 1623), but generally takes the form of Lautie or Lawtie in mss. The lands of Laithis in Ayrshire, from which the surname is taken, were granted to the Fullartons on the resignation of Thomas Laithis of that Ilk, c. 1350 (Stodarf, II, p. 190; RMS., I, 397). William del Lathes was juror on an inquisition at Lochmaben in 1347 (Bain, III, 1449), and William Lathis and Adam Lathis were witnesses in Ayr in 1476 (Friars Ayr, p. 55). Thomas Layse and Andrew Layse, sons of Adam Layse in Ayr, are in record in 1509, and Friar Andrew Lathis, son of Adam Lathis, resigned a tenement in Woodgate, Ayr, in 1518 (ibid., p. 75, 81). Adam Lawte witnessed a precept of clare constat at Coldingham in 1525 (Home, 35), John Lawta witnessed a notarial transumpt in Haddington in 1537 (fames II, 21), James Lawtie was member of Scots parliament for Cullen, 1628 (Hanna, II, p. 502), and Mr. James Lautie was minister at Chimside in 1695 (Lauder).
