Origin of Lazarev surname

The owner of the surname Lazarev can rightfully be proud of his ancestors, information about which is contained in various documents confirming the trace left by them in the history of Russia.

The surname Lazarev is formed on behalf of his own and belongs to the common type of Russian surnames.

After 988, every Slav during the official baptism ceremony received from the priest a baptismal name that served only one purpose - to provide a person with a personal name.

The basis of the surname Lazarev was the church name Lazarus. Often, the ancient Slavs added the name of his father to the name of the newborn, thereby indicating belonging to a particular genus. This is due to the fact that there were relatively few baptismal names, and they were often repeated. The addition to the person's name in the form of a middle name helped solve the problem of identification. In the future, it was the middle name that was often transformed into the name of the descendants.

So, the basis of the surname Lazarev is the Christian personal name Lazarus (from the Hebrew 'Elazar' - 'God helped'). In the late XIX - early XX centuries, the name was very common, but now it is extremely rare, perhaps in connection with two winged expressions in Russian: 'Sing Lazarus' - i.e. 'Begging, pitying someone', and 'Poor as Lazarus' - to indicate an extreme upset of affairs.

In the Bible, Lazarus is the brother of Mark and Martha from the village of Bethany, who, according to legend, hospitably accepted Jesus Christ in their house. The seriously ill Lazarus lay in his house in Bethany. Christ was informed of this, but by the time he appeared, Lazarus had already been dead for four days. On the way to the house of Jesus, Martha came to him and then Mary fell at his feet. They went to the sepulcher, 'it was a cave, and a stone lay on it' ... Jesus asked: 'Take away the stone.' Martha was afraid, but Jesus told her that if she truly believes, she will see a miracle. And 'called out in a loud voice:' Lazarus! Go out. ' Lazarus alive left the cave. Lazarus then lived another 40 years, he was bishop of Kition in Cyprus.

The possibility of the formation of separate surnames from the common nickname 'Lazarus' is also possible (although less likely) - in dialects this word has different meanings: 'dodger', 'lazy student', 'flatterer'.

Already in the XV – XVI centuries in Russia, family names began to be fixed and passed down from generation to generation, denoting a person's belonging to a particular family. These were possessive adjectives with the suffixes -ov / -ev, -in, originally indicating the name of the head of the family. Thus, the descendants of a person who had the name or nickname Lazarus, eventually received the name of Lazarev.

At present, it is difficult to talk about the exact place and time of the surname Lazarev, since the process of forming surnames was quite lengthy. Nevertheless, the surname Lazarev is a wonderful monument of Slavic writing and culture.
