Le Bras Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The Le Bras surname is derived from the Breton Ar Brazh, which means 'the great' or 'the imposing'. In a policy of debrotonization names (massively translating Breton names into French ones) in the 16th century in Brittany, some names in Breton are translated roughly into Latin and then French. An Bihan becomes Le Bihan, Ar Fur becomes Le Fur and Ar Brazh becomes Le Bras. This modification of the names thus changes the ortograph in relation to the original Breton name, and leads to confusion because in French Le Bras means 'the arm'.

- goulebras

It is a Breton surname. It comes from braz, meaning 'big' in Breton language. The original surname is likely Ar Braz with the Breton definite article ar. It is thought that at the time of transcription of names, French clerks replaced the Breton article with the French equivalent, as happened with many Breton surnames: Le Hir, Le Meur, Le Bihan.
