Evidently from Laycock in the West Riding of Yorkshire. William Laicok was vicar of Retre (Rattray) in 1492 (RAA., II, 338). John Lacok, canon of Dunkeld, was auditor of accounts of the bishopric between 1505—17 (Rent. Dunk.). Sara Lacok in Edinburgh, 1602 (Edinb. Marr.). Jean Leacock in Fordie, 1695, and three more of the name are in record (Dunkeld).

The Laycocks have been resident for many generations in the district of Leeds, and it is in that locality that they are now most numerous. Westrope Laycock, gent., was buried in Leeds parish church in 1685 (Th.), and Westerop Lacock was a Leeds gentleman in the reign of Anne (G.). Laycock is the name of a Wiltshire parish The Lodges were much respected merchants of Leeds in the 17th and 18th centuries; in the parish church there is, or was, a brass plate to "Maister William Lodge, the best of men," who died in 1648 (Th.).
