Leamy Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Ó Laomdha and later Ó Léime A sept of Upper Ormond. SIF 104
This is the name of an old Gaelic sept of Upper Ormond. There were 15 families of these in the Tipperary hearth money rolls. At the same time the 1659-60 “census” names Leany as one of the principal Irish surnames in the barony of Eliogarty, Co. Tipperary while Leamy is not listed. In this case Leany may possibly be an error for Leamy; however, in the Fiants we find O'Leny and O'Lenie in Munster as well as O'Leamy and O'Leamygh: according to Woulfe Leeney is from Ó Laighnigh while Leamy is from O'Léime or Ó Laomhda. D. F. Gleeson's Last Lords of Ormond has some interesting observations on the retention of land throughout centuries of confiscation by certain families in north Tipperary, among them the Leamys. They were still strong on Co. Tipperary in 1855 when there were 33 householders of the name there; the number is now much smaller.
