From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

An old Aberdeenshire surname. William Lipp to render an account of the eels of Cluny, Perthshire, in 1264 (ER., I, p. 2). Walter Lippe was one of the witnesses to the "carta fundacionis domus elemosinarie apud Turreth" (Turriff) by Alexander Cummyn, earl of Buchan, 1273 (CAB., p. 470). John Lyp or Lyppe of the county of Aberdene rendered homage in 1296. The seal attached to his homage shows a lean dog coiled gnawing a bone, and S' Johanis Lipe (Bain, II, p. 203,208, 552). Thomas Lipp or de Lipp had a charter from David II of the lands of Netherdull, Drumbeth, and Pettinbruynache, with office of constabulary of Culan in sheriffdom of Aberdeen (RMS., I, App. II, 988). Thomas de Lippes was among the Scots prisoners taken at the battle of Durham in 1346 (Hailes, II, p. 390, who adds: "If he was not a foreigner, I know not who he was"). John Lip was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1452 (NSCM., I, p. 13). A family of this name is said to have succeeded to the property of Schivas through marriage with the heiress of Schivas of that Ilk (CAB., p. 334). They were succeeded by Maitlands in the fifteenth century. Rev. Robert Lippe edited selections from Wodrow's Biographical collections, 1890. Two brothers named Lipp from Forglen served in the first Great War (Turriff). The name may be Frisian Lippe is said to be a pet form of Philip (Winkler, Friesche naamlijst, s.v.).
