From Old English leapere, a basket-maker. A leap was a basket made of rush or sedge. Johannes Leper was a burgess of Edinburgh in 1189 (Nisbet, I, p. 304). Walter Lippre witnessed a charter of Turriff in 1272 (REA., I, p. 34), Patrick Leper was a burgess of Edinburgh in 1368 (Egidii, p. 1), and Andrew Lepar witnessed an instrument of concord between the bishop of Aberdeen and John de Forbes, dominus ejusdem, in 1391 (REA., I, p. 189). Alexander Lepar was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1408 and William Lepar in 1487 (NSCM., I, p. 3, 32), and Alan Leppar and Adam Leppayr were burgesses of Prestwick in 1507 (Prestwick, p. 10). An illustration of the Lepar tomb in St. Andrews is in Proceed. Soc. Ant. Scot., XLV, p. 508—509. The name has nothing to do with leper, one affected with leprosy (ME. and AF. lepre). Leaper: A “leap” was a sort of basket made of rush. In Wyckliffe’s version, Moses is placed in a “leap of segg”— i.e., basket of sedge. So also Matt. viii. 8: “And thei eeten and weren fulfilled, and thei taken up that that left sevene leepis.” Hence the names Lipman, Leapman, Lipper. Has nothing to do with “lepper.”But the Dutch loeper, German laufer, is a running footman. Cf. Pott, “Personnennamen,” p. 632.
There was an inscription in Holden church in the East Riding referring to Mr. T. Leaper, of Barnby, who died in 1710 (G.). Leaper has also been a well - known Derby name for two centuries; it occurs frequently in the list of the mayors and aldermen of Derby during the last and the present century (Glover's "Derbyshire").
