From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

An old surname in the Merse, derived from the lands of Learmonth, Berwickshire. William de Leirmontht was juror on an inquisition at Swinton in 1408 (Swinton, p. xviil). Jacobus Lermonth was presbyter of Glasgow diocese and notary public, 1454 (Pollok, I, p. 176). William of Lermonth, summoned in 1479 to answer to Parliament for treason and other crimes (APS., II. p. 129), may be the William of Lewrmonth who witnessed a declaration by John of Roule in the same year (Home, 25). Sir James Learmonth of Dairsie, master of the household to James V, was provost of St. Andrews in 1546. William Lermocht witnessed a precept of sasine at Coldingham, 1557 (Home, 195), and persons named Leirmount, Leirmontt, and Lermont appear in the list of tenants on lands of the Abbey of Kelso, 1567 (Kelso). The family of Leirmonth of Balcomy is now extinct. The Leimontoff family of Russia claim descent from Learmont of Scotland. The claim seems well attested. Michael Lermontoff, one of the greatest Russian poets in the nineteenth century was descended from a Scots emigrant of the seventeenth century. John Learmont published a volume of Poems in Edinburgh, 1791.
