Leather Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Leather.' Although I have scarcely any instances, there can be no doubt of the origin of names prefixed with Leather. Leather was a personal name. 'One Lethar was a bishop in the days of Ethelbert.' (Lower, Patronymica Britannica). Hence such localities as Letheringham and Letheringsett, and such local surnames as Leatherdale, Leatherby, Leatherhead, or Leatherbarrow. Leatherwine occurs as a single name (without surname), Cambridgeshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
1582. Buried — Alyce Lether, daughter of William, of the plague: St. Michael, Cornhill.
1623. Peter Leather and Sarah Bainam: Marriage Lic (London).
1633. Married — Nathaniel Carter and Ann Leather: St. Antholin (London).
1663. Samuel Pine and Sarah Leather: Marriage Alleg. (Canterbury).
(Teutonic) 1 That this is a single-element pers. name is shown by the occurrence of Leatherwine in the Hundred Rolls, and it conceivably represents Old English hléoþor, ‘melody,’ ‘song’ (although it is a neuter noun); but the O.Ger. Lethar is considered to be a compound of O.H.Ger. leil, ‘hostile,’ ‘hateful,’ and hart, ‘army.’ 2 That the surname is also a comparatively modern nickname from the material-Old English leþer-can hardly be doubted.
An ancient personal name. One Lethar was a bishop in the days of AEthelbert. God. Dipl. 981. Hence the local surnames, Leatherby, Leatherdale, Leatherhead, and Leatherbarrow.
Same as Lethar, name of a bishop at the time of Ethelbert. Förstemann refers the Old German names Leither, Lethar, Modern German Leder, to O. High German leid, O. S. léd, hostile; but these names are more probably from German leiter, leader; or from Old German laut-her, distinguished lord or leader. Hence the Old German Clothar, and the names Clothier, Luther, and Clotaire.
