This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'at the lees,' v. Lees; compare Ellice for Ellis, or Avice for Avis. (2) Local, 'of Leece,' a hamlet near Ulverston, in the Furness district of North Lancashire. The derivation is the same as (1). Leece is still found as a surname in Ulverston and the neighbourhood. It is commonly met with in the Ulverston Church registers.
