This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Leeming,' a village near Bedale, Yorkshire, (a) Personal, 'the son of Leming' (v. Halliwell, and Promptorium Parvulorum pp. 295-6). In the Towneley Mysteries Leming is a horse's name, from its bright, flashing colour. 'Say, Malle and Stott, Wille ye not go? Lemynge, Morelle, White-horne,' The editor says that Leming as a cow's name occurs in the will of a West Riding yeoman. That Leming was a personal name and became a surname seems indubitable.
