From Old English leapere, a basket-maker. A leap was a basket made of rush or sedge. Johannes Leper was a burgess of Edinburgh in 1189 (Nisbet, I, p. 304). Walter Lippre witnessed a charter of Turriff in 1272 (REA., I, p. 34), Patrick Leper was a burgess of Edinburgh in 1368 (Egidii, p. 1), and Andrew Lepar witnessed an instrument of concord between the bishop of Aberdeen and John de Forbes, dominus ejusdem, in 1391 (REA., I, p. 189). Alexander Lepar was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1408 and William Lepar in 1487 (NSCM., I, p. 3, 32), and Alan Leppar and Adam Leppayr were burgesses of Prestwick in 1507 (Prestwick, p. 10). An illustration of the Lepar tomb in St. Andrews is in Proceed. Soc. Ant. Scot., XLV, p. 508—509. The name has nothing to do with leper, one affected with leprosy (ME. and AF. lepre).
