Leeson Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. A corruption of Levison, v. Lewis. I am told that the Levison-Gowers call themselves the Lesson-Gowers. (a) Bapt. 'the son of Lece,' i.e. Lettice. Lecia and Lece seem to have been popular forms.
Lecia de Eltesle, Cambridgeshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
Robert fil Lece, Cambridgeshire, ibid.
Lecia Arnet, Cambridgeshire, ibid.
Johannes Lesson, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.
Gryfyn Leyson, 1524: Register of the University of Oxford.
1625. Joseph Willmor and Sarah Leason: Marriage Lic. (London).
1666. Francis Bromley and Frances Leeson: Marriage Alleg. (Canterbury).
Woulfe suggests that Leeson is the modern form of the name O'Lishane or O'Lyshane, which occurs in Fiants of 1601 for Counties Cork and Kerry, and further that these are corrupt forms of Gleeson (Ó Gliasáin). I do not dispute this possibility; but it should be remembered that Leeson is an English name, a fact to which Woulfe does not allude. Its familiarity to Dubliners is due to the well-known Leeson Street, named from the patronymic of the Earl of Milltown. This family, according to Craig, came to Ireland about 1680, made a large fortune as brewers and acquired much property in the area around what is now Dawson Street. The name Leeson is found in Ireland before 1680: four Leesons occur in the lists of army personnel in the Ormond Manuscripts, the earliest in 1644.The name has never become numerous: birth registrations of the last century indicate that it is rare outside Dublin and the neighbouring Leinster counties. A notable Dublin architect was John Leeson (fl. 1830).
1 Lece’s Son: Lece, apparently a diminutive of Letitia.
2 for Leveson, q.v.
3 (occasionally) Lee’s Son [v. Lee, Lea]
The main families of this name came to Ireland in the seventeenth century. It may possibly also have been used as a form of O'Lishane which Woulfe says is a corrupt form of Ó Gliasáin-see Gleeson. SIF 105
Perhaps a contraction from Levison.
From the German, Lieson; from the Flemish, Liessens; a personal name.
