James Legge (1815—1897), one of the most distinguished Sinologists, was born at Huntly, Aberdeenshire. The name has been derived from Old West Norse Leggr (Jonsson, Aarboger for nordisk Oldkyndighed, 1907, p. 221), but in Scotland is more likely to be of local origin, from ledge, dative case of Old English lech, 'at the lea.'
