(from an ancestor's occupation) or (from a priestly or Levite lineage) Lehman (n) is a technical term from the Middle Ages and means a vassal of a feudal lord. As a Jewish family name it is derived from the profession of banking or money lending. In German leihen means “to lend,” and Leihhaus is a pawnshop and Leihman was the pawnbroker.
