Lemass Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
In this form this Dublin name is not on record before the eighteenth century. I think it is the anglicized form of the French le Maistre, which was well-known in Dublin business circles in the eighteenth century but disappears after 1845. A Leighlin will of a Carlow le Maistre brings it back to 1731. No records now survive to determine whether these have any connexion with people called le Maistre who appear in our mediaeval documents as far back as 1258. Le Maistre, and also Lemasle, are among the names of Huguenot refugees who settled in Great Britain and Ireland.
Sean Lemass, a Dublin man, is the present Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of the Republic of Ireland.
