John of Levenax, the duke of Albany's man, had a safe conduct into England, 1400 (Bain, IV, 570), and John de Lenox witnessed sale of a tenement in Glasgow, 1428 (LCD., p. 244). William Levinax, younger, of Caly, was accused of forethought felony and oppression in Kirkcudbright, 1508 (Trials, I, p. 54), and Donald Levenax, a follower of the earl of Casillis, was respited for murder in 1526 (RSS., I, 3386). George Lennox, bailie depute of earl of Cassilis at Glenluce, 1543 (Dumfriesshire and Galloway Nat. Hist, and Ant. Soc., Trans., 3. ser. XXI, p. 293). William Levenax was retoured heir in lands in the parish of Girtoun, etc., 1572 (Retours, Kirkcudbright, 31), and Patrick Levenax was merchant burgess of Glasgow, 1598 (Burgesses), John Lenox of Calie appears in 1647 (Retours, Kirkcudbright, 245), and Walter Lennox in Balcorroch, parish of Campsie, 1669 (Campsie). James Lenox (1800—1880), son of Robert Lenox, a Scots merchant who emigrated to New York in 1784, was founder of the Lenox Library, now incorporated in Levynnax 1556.

The ancient county of Dumbarton, Scotland, once much more extensive than now. The original name of the district was Leven-ach, 'the field of the Leven,' and designated not the basin only of that river, but also of Loch-Lomond, once called Loch-Leven. Levenachs came to be the name applied to the extensive possessions of the powerful Earls of the soil, and hence Levenax and Lennox. Imp. Gaz. of Scotland.
Local: from the district or county of Lennox, now Dumbarton. Egrith, a Saxon noble, who died in 1064, was the ancestor of Alwin Mac Arkyll, who was created Earl of Lennox, temp. Malcolm IV, and was the founder of the family of Lennox.

The river was so called from Llyfn, in the Welsh, which signifies a smooth, placid stream. Leven—achs, for a while spelt and written Levenax, and finally Lennox. Arkil, a Saxon, a baron of Northumbria, who took refuge from the vengeance of the Norman William under the protection of Malcom Canmore, appears to have been the founder of the Lennox family.
