John of Levenax, the duke of Albany's man, had a safe conduct into England, 1400 (Bain, IV, 570), and John de Lenox witnessed sale of a tenement in Glasgow, 1428 (LCD., p. 244). William Levinax, younger, of Caly, was accused of forethought felony and oppression in Kirkcudbright, 1508 (Trials, I, p. 54), and Donald Levenax, a follower of the earl of Casillis, was respited for murder in 1526 (RSS., I, 3386). George Lennox, bailie depute of earl of Cassilis at Glenluce, 1543 (Dumfriesshire and Galloway Nat. Hist, and Ant. Soc., Trans., 3. ser. XXI, p. 293). William Levenax was retoured heir in lands in the parish of Girtoun, etc., 1572 (Retours, Kirkcudbright, 31), and Patrick Levenax was merchant burgess of Glasgow, 1598 (Burgesses), John Lenox of Calie appears in 1647 (Retours, Kirkcudbright, 245), and Walter Lennox in Balcorroch, parish of Campsie, 1669 (Campsie). James Lenox (1800—1880), son of Robert Lenox, a Scots merchant who emigrated to New York in 1784, was founder of the Lenox Library, now incorporated in Levynnax 1556.
