From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

The Leod of Macleod, which see, is explained as from Old West Norse Liotr, a name identical with the adjective liotr, ugly. Leod dux is mentioned in an Old English charter of A.D. 958 (Birch, Cartularium Saxonicum, 1044). The name of earlier Leods may or may not be from the same origin. The oldest copy of the Pictish Chronicle (tenth century) mentions one Leot who made a journey to Rome, c. 966—971 (CPS., p. 10). Leot, abbot of Brechin witnessed a grant by Gartnait and Ete to the Abbey of Deer, c. 1131—32 (Bk. Deer, III, 6). As Leod, abbot of Brechin he witnessed King David's grant of Nithbren and Balcristin to the Abbey of Dunfermline, c. 1150 (RD., p. 8). As Led, and Lyed, abbot, he attests two other charters by the same king (RPSA., p. 185,187). Leod de Brechin witnessed King David's grant of Rindelgros to the Abbey of Reading, c. 1143—47 (May, 2), and also the gift of Clerchitune in Midlothian to the church of S. Marie of Hadintune, c. 1148 (RPSA., p. 182).
