My family fled the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia to a refugee camp in Thailand where they later immigrated to the United States because my grandfather fought on the Lon Nol side; the Khme Republic. Therefore, we are one of the first born American in our family; being the first American generation in our family. Therefore, our last name can be seen as a Cambodian-American last name since it is not a typical Khmer last name and is given to us, becoming our first American identity after native born.
