From Livet, Normandy. Ralph, William, Roger, Gilbert, Hugh Livet, Normandy, 1180-95 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae). From John de Livet, banneret c. 1200, descended the Marquises of Barville (Des Bois). Roger de Livet granted lands in Stafford to Tetbury Abbey, t. William I. (Mon. i. 355). Robert de Livet held two fees Warwick, t. Henry I. (Lib. Niger). Thomas and Ralph L. held lands in Normandy 1165 (Feod. Norm.). William Livet of Yorkshire, c. 1200 (Rotuli Curiae Regis); Eustace Livet, York, 13th cent. (Testa de Neville); John L. York, 1316 (Parliamentary Writs).
The Levetts were the patrons of the living of Brenset in the time of Elizabeth, and they also held it as incumbents (H.). In the middle of last century, Francis Levett, Turkey merchant, died at Nethersole in the parish of Wimlingswold (H.). This is also a Sussex name.
The Levetts or Levitts belong to an old Sussex family of influence. In the reign of Elizabeth, Lawrence Levitt held an estate in Annington (D.); and in 1588 John Levett, a Sussex gentleman, subscribed £40 towards the fund collected during the scare of the Spanish Armada (Sp.). Livett was the name of four mayors of Hastings between 1506 and 1552 (M.). Reference to the Levetts of Kent will be found under that county.
