Thomas Leweris in Lairdlauch was witness in Kirkcudbrightshire in 1618 (Laing, 1798), and Mathew Lewers was 'beucher' in Newtoune, 1640 (Hunter, p. 80). David Lewers appears in Fokertoune, parish of Lesmahago in 1680, and ten more of the name are recorded in the Commissariot Record of Lanark between 1680—1800.
