From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A rare surname if still in existence. It is perhaps of local origin from Leithen in Peeblesshire. John Lethane witnessed a notarial instrument in 1517 (Soltre, p. 89), and Andro Lethane was appointed 'maister saidler to the king,' 1526 (RSS., I, 3405). Jonet Lethane, a tenant near Melrose, 1546 (RRM., III, p. 148), may be Janet Lithen who was tenant under the Abbey of Kelso, 1567 (Kelso, p. 524). James Lethen appears in Lessuddane, 1606 (RRM., I, p. 6). James Leidon from the parish of Cavers, taken at Bothwell Brig, 1679, was banished to America, and drowned in the wreck of the ship off Orkney (Hanna, II, p. 254). James Leidden in Earlside appears in 1688, another James Leidden is in Edgerstounshieils, 1690, and a third James Leidden is in Estloidge, 1698 (Peebles CR.). John Leyden (1775—1811) was physician, poet, and a great Orientalist.
