From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
From Liberton, the name of a village and parish in Midlothian. Aleyn de Lyberton and David de Lyberton, king's tenants in the county of Edinburgh, rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 199 201), and in 1311 a jury was named to inquire into the value of the land of (among others) Alland de Liberton and David de Liberton. The same Alan and David de Libertone appear in 1312 as jurors on forfeited lands in Lothian (Bain, III, 245). John de Libertoun held land in Edinburgh in 1405 (Egidii, p. 42), William de Lebirtoun or Libertone was provost of Edinburgh in 1425—26—29 (RMS., II, 34; Egidii, p. 47; REG., 336), and a benefactor of Newbattle Abbey in 1429 (Neubotie). William Libertoune de eodem was a witness in 1455 (Cambus., 97), Henry Leberton of the Lainy petitioned for a safe conduct into England in 1464 (Bain, IV, 1346), Henry Libertone de eodem appears as witness in Edinburgh in 1476 (REG., 411), and James Libbertoune was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1483 (NSCM., I, p. 30). Thomas Libertoun was a beidman in Edinburgh in 1575 (Soltre, p. 230), James Libertoun was heir of William Libertoun, baker in Edinburgh, 1547 (Refours, Edinburgh, 1406), and David Libbertoun or Libbertone, burgess of Edinburgh, had his lands bewitched by a warlock in 1603 (Trials, II, p. 422). With the Forresters the Libbertons were the most eminent representatives of burgher nobility in Edinburgh (Wilson, Reminiscences of Edinburgh, I, p. 107). Lybertoun 1426.
