A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Of territorial origin probably from Liddel in Roxburghshire. There is, however, an old manor of Liddel in Cumberland from which the name may also have been derived. Persons named Lidel or Lidale appear in various records of the reigns of David II, Robert II, and Robert III, and James I, but none of them seem to have had lands in Liddesdale (OPS., I, p. 359). Richard de Lidel witnessed a charter of the church of Largs between 1202—34 (CMN., 8). Galfridus Liddal in Roxburghshire is in record 1266 (ER., I, p. 28). Others of the name early migrated northwards and became prominent in Aberdeen. In 1321 Nicholas Lyddal (Leddall or de Lyddal), burgess of Aberdeen, had grant of a charter (REA., I, p. 46), and was provost in 1327. John of Lydel was merchant in Aberdeen, 1358 (Bain, IV, 26) and William de Lydell, sheriff there in same year (ER., I, p. 551). John of Ledalle, esquire of Scotlanc., had safe conduct into England, 1426 (Bain, IV, 994). John de Ledail, juror at Lanark, 1432 (RAA., I, 65), George of Ledale, rector of Foresta, was secretary of James III (Lennox, II, p. 74). James de Ledale of Halcarstone witnessed a sasine, 1459 (REG., p. 412), and Quintin Liddale of that Ilk served on an inquest held at Jedburgh, 1464 (HMC., 7 Rep., App. p. 728). Ledal 1456, Leddale 1396, Ledelh 1494, Lidel 1497, Lithill 1669, Lydale 1362, Lyddaile 1562, Lyddale 1470; Ledel.
