Local, "at the lidgate," Old English hlidgeat, ME. Udyate, lidgget, a gate between ploughed land and meadow. A Lidgate near Lauder, Berwickshire, is recorded c, 1170, there is a Ludgate near Coldingham, and there is a Lugat in the lordship of Stow (Edinburgh Retours, 1606; Lugget 1648). John Letgate appears as a forestaller in Aberdeen, 1402 (CRA., p. 384). Wilzame Ludgat and Gilbert Ludgat were declared innocent of part in the detention of King James III in Edinburgh Castle in 1482 (The Lennox, II, p. 123). Henry Lidgaite and Kentigern Lidgait had precept of remission in 1536 (RSS., II, 2033). James Lidgait in Stitchill was assaulted in 1667 (Stitchill, p. 47), John Luggatt in Dundee, 1709 (Brechin), and Robert Ludgate, shoemaker in Coldingham, 1795 (Lauder). Probably confused with Legat, which see. Ledgait 1609, Lugit 1665. Liddiatt recorded in Corstorphine, 1941.
