Lightbourne Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Lightbourn.' Probably there are several spots so called in Lancashire. A suburb of my old parish (Ulverston, North Lancashire) is called Lightburne, the beck or burn flowing alongside (v. Burn). With the corrupted Lightbound, compare Simmonds for Simmons, or rib and for ribbon. The ri, of course, is an I excrescence. That Lightbown and Lightbowne are variants of Lightbourn is proved below, although proof is not needed. There is no representative of any of the forms in my London Directory (1870). It is well confined to Lancashire.

Roger Lightborn, of Caton, 1593: Lancashire Wills at Richmond.

Robert Lightbourne, of Eccles, 1598: Wills at Chester.

William Lightbourne, of Bolton-le- Moors, 1614: ibid.

In the next generation the name is written Lightbowne:

James Lightbowne, of Manchester, 1621: Wills at Chester.

Alexander Lightbowne, of Eccles, 1638: ibid.

In Ulverston, Lightburn is a name over a shop in close proximity to the suburb Lightburne.
