Liddall (Place names of Fife and Kinross) spells the name Lillioche. Wautier Lillok and Thomas Lillok of Peeblesshire rendered homage in 1296. The seal of Thomas bears a six-leaved figure, S' Thome Lillog (Bain, II, p. 204,534). As Walter Lilley and Thomas Lilley they appear as jurors on an inquest at Peebles, 1304 (ibid., II. p. 377). Thomas de Lyllay was a Scots prisoner of war in Bristol, 1305 (ibid., p. 448). John Lillai witnessed a charter of lands of Lintonrothirrik, c. 1316 (RHM., I, 19), and in 1327 it was proposed to bring water through the lands of Thomas de Lillay to the mill of Peebles (ER., I, p. 71). George Lely had remission in 1359 (ER., I, p. 591), William Lillie is recorded in Redden, 1682 (Peebles CR.), Issobell Lilie and Thomas Lilie were in the toune of Bowdene, 1567 (Kelso, p. 519), and Alexander Lillie in Gatehouse, 1795 (Kirkcudbright). Leillei (in Workman MS.), Lyllie 1632. Alexander Lilie was inhabitant of Old Aberdeen, 1651 (Relours, Aberdeen, 594), and Robert Lilley, Orientalist, went to Japan in 1875, and after acquiring the language assisted in perfecting the system of printing for the blind now in use there; came to United States in 1881 and was one of the editors of the Century dictionary. Also an ancient Lincolnshire surname (Guppy, p. 275).
