Limerick Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

As a modern surname this has no connexion with the Irish city but is derived from a French place and first took the form de l'Ambroux, later de Lambrouk; its earlier form in this country was Limbrick.

As Limbrick and Limrick it occurs five times in the Co. Derry hearth money rolls of 1665. It is traditionally believed to have come to Ireland from France via Scotland. Occasional examples of de Lumeryk (i.e. of Limerick city) do occur in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries but this does not appear to have been more than an ephemeral surname.
