Limpetlaw Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

LEMPITLAW: From the lands of Lempitlaw in the parish of Sprouston, Roxburghshire. Galfridus de Lempedlawe or Lempedlav appears c. 1190 as clericus regis and camerarius regis (Kelso, p. 128,142). A later Galfridus de Limpedlaue was a charter witness, c. 1258 (ibid., p. 243). William Francis had a charter from Robert the Bruce of the 20 lib. land of Sproustoun which was in the king's hand through forfeiture of Hugo Limpetlaw and others (RMS., I, App. II, 285). William Lempatelaw was bailie of Lanark, 1464 (Lanark, p. 377), and John of Lempitlaw in Lanark in 1488 is mentioned again in 1501 as John Lempatlaw (Lanark, p. 4, 11). The lands of Andrew Lympetlaw in the burgh of Lanark are mentioned as a boundary in 1580, and in 1587 the lands belonged to William Lempitlaw (RMS., V, 79, 1450). Individuals named Lempetlaw and Lympetlaw are recorded in Edinburgh in 1605 and 1610 (Edinb. Marr.), and Robert Lympitlaw, skinner, was a burgess there in 1652 (Inquis., 3685). Limpetlaw 1625.
