User-submitted Reference

The name Lindquist is an example of an "ornamental" name. Prior to the early 19th century, patronyms were used in Sweden--the son of Gustaf would take the patronym Gustafson. During the late 18th century and early 19th century, there was a gradual move away from patronyms, and people began retaining the same surname from generation to generation. In most cases, this was a frozen patronym--Gustafson would become the ongoing family name throughout the generations. In some case, Swedes elected to literally make up a name because it had an "ornamental" or poetic quality. Lindquist is an example of this. It literally means "branch of the Linden tree". In Sweden trees and wood have long been of nearly sanctified status; lumber was the basis of the economy, and trees provided shelter and warmth; further, nature and forests held connotations of beauty and the sacred. This status goes back to the pre-Christian pagan era, during which trees were central in worship. Swedes were also known for great skills in woodwork. So by selecting a tree as part of the surname, people evoked an ornamental quality by referencing this important tree.
