The Lingings family can be traced to Gloucestershire, England in the 1800s. Prior to Lingings, the family name was Lingen. The most famous Lingen family member being Sir Henry Lingen, Lord of Sutton, Lingen and Stoke Edith. He was a Royalist commander in the English Civil War. The name is derived from the town of Lingen in Germany and is believed to have travelled to England during the 1066 Norman Conquest. Tursten de Lingen was one of William the Conqueror's standard bearers and is depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry. The name is recorded in the Domesday Book, and the family existed in the same area of Herefordshire for hundreds of years.
