The name is derived from the town of Lingen in Germany and is believed to have travelled to England during the 1066 Norman Conquest. Tursten de Lingen was one of William the Conqueror's standard bearers and is depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry. The name is recorded in the Domesday Book, and the family existed in the same area of Herefordshire for hundreds of years.
