Canon Tierney, after stating this fact, says,' The family name, with the accent on the first syllable, is still common in the district (Claxby), which, within the memory of persons yet alive, was a wild expanse covered with furze and ling' (Lingard's History of English).

This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the ling-ward' or 'ling-guard' (1). I can only suggest this solution. The great Catholic historian was of Lincolnshire parentage. Canon Tierney, after stating this fact, says,' The family name, with the accent on the first syllable, is still common in the district (Claxby), which, within the memory of persons yet alive, was a wild expanse covered with furze and ling' (Lingard's History of English). Lancashire and Cheshire have been familiar with the surname for at least five centuries; compare Woodward, and v. Ling.
