User-submitted Reference
The Lisher surname came into being for the first time on 20 August 1665 when Jane Lusher's baptism was recorded as "Lisher" in the West Tarring Parish Register (Sussex). At that time, it was just an isolated event. However, from 1708 onward, Richard Lusher and Ann Quinnell's children were all noted as Lisher in Broadwater Parish Register. From then onward, the name remained as Lisher. Practically all the Lishers in the UK and South Africa descend from these ancestors who were to be found mainly in Lancing (from 1636), Broadwater and later Sompting for about three centuries. Their earliest recorded ancestor was Thomas Lussher of Little Horsted, married to Alice Swayne in Framfield on 6 August 1564. This family was related in some way to the Lussher family of Puttenham in Surrey whose ancestor Thomas Lussher, a Devon man, began his career in the Duchy of Lancaster administration and later received promotion to become Auditor for Crown Lands in Brecon, Wales, during the reign of Henry VII.
To my knowledge, the name Lisher in the US is not connected to this family. The name may have Jewish origins or be derived from the Norfolk Lusher family: Eleazer Lusher, emigrated to the US in the first part of the 17th Century. At the Visitation of the Heralds in London in the 17th century, Henry Lusher (born in Norfolk and living in London) claimed that his family were a "younger branch" of the Lusshers of Shoelands (Puttenham).
