1744. Married — Nicholas Lyle and Elizabeth Davenport: St. George's Chapel, Mayfair.
1747. — Davie Lisle and Jane Harrison: ibid.
A family of this name were barons of Duchal in Renfrewshire as early as the beginning of the thirteenth century. The statement in Wood's edition of Douglas's Peerage that "the surname of L'lsle or Lyle was first assumed by the proprietors of some of the western isles in the reign of Malcolm Canmore is erroneous. They were of the same stock as the Northumberland family of 'de Insula' (as the name appears in Latin) or 'Lisle' (de Lisle, Delisle in French). The first of the name in Scotland appears to have been Radulphus or Ralph de Insula, a follower of the Steward, who witnessed the gift by Baldwin de Bigre, sheriff of Lanharc (Lanark), of the church of Innerkyp to the monks of Paisley, c. 1170 (RMP., p. 112), and also, about the same period, witnessed the gift of the ferms of his mill at Paisley by Walter Fitz-Alan for the soul of Sir Robert de Brus (ibid., p. 87). Before 1177 he witnessed the gift of the church of Cragyn (Craigie in Kyle) by Walter Hose to the monks of Paisley (ibid., p. 232), and a. 1189 he attested a charter by Richard de Morevil (REG., p. 39). William deYlle, witness to a charter by Walter Fitz-Alan. c. 1208—18, is the William de Lite who witnessed a resignation by Roger, prior of Paisley, of certain lands, c. 1222—33 (RMP., p. 20). Sometime before 1228 Peter de Insula appears as witness to a donation to the Abbey of Kelso by Gilbert de Vmfravill (Kelso, 325). Alan de Insula, one of the knights of Alexander Fitz-Walter the High Steward, witnessed a number of his charters before 1252 (RMP., p. 21, 87, 91,113), and Robert de Insula was a cleric of the diocese of St. Andrews about the same time (RPSA., p. 157,169). Ralph de Insula, lord of Duchyl, witnessed the sale of Aldhingleston to the Abbey of Paisley, c. 1260 (RMP., p. 58), and Peter de Insula witnessed two charters of lands in Lennox to the Abbey of Paisley by Malcolm, earl of Lennox in 1273 (RMP., p. 204,201; Levenax, p. 15, 17). John del Ille of Berwickshire and Richard del Isle of Edinburghshire rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 201,207), and Cristinus de Insula appears c. 1340 as 'tunc vicecomite de Perth' (Scon, 137). Payment was made to Robert de Lyle in 1358 for furs for the chamberlain (ER., I, p. 595), and a precept by Robert, dominus de Lyle, dated 1452, is witnessed by Alexander Lyle and William Lyle 'patruis meis carissimis' (RMP., p. 250). In the same year William de Lyle granted the monastery of Paisley 'tertiam partem totius piscarie de le Crukyshot' (ibid.). John Lile of Stanypethe was charged with assisting thieves, 1530 (Trials, I, p. 144), William Leill is recorded in Lumloch, 1671 (Campsie), and the surname is common in Kilbarchan Commissariot Record. In the middle of the sixteenth century the family ended in the direct line in an heiress, and the lands of Duchal passed from the Lyles to Porter of Porterfield. Patrick de Lyle was juror on inquisition at Swinton, 1408 (Swinton, p. xviii). Some Lyles still exist in the parish of Whittinghame, probably descendants of the old Lylls of Staneypath. See also Ile.
(French-Latin) the common French Delisle = Of the Isle [Old French Anglo-French del isle (mod.

(French) Dweller on the small island.
"Of this surname were several families, springing originally from two, which had derived the designation, one from the Isle of Ely, the other from the Isle of Wight." Burke's Ext. Peerage. Eighteen different coats of arms are ascribed to this name by Berry. The principal forms of it are Lisle, L'Isle, Lyle, Lylle, Lyell. In charters it was latinized De Insula.
