This surname is a popular abridgment of the name of the royal burgh of Linlithgow, an abridgment found as early as 1311. Magister Symon de Lynlithcu witnessed an instrument at the church of Cargil, 1225, and Petrus de Linlithqw was a canon of the priory of St. Andrews, 1245 (RPSA., p. 307). Peter Linlithku, son of deceased John, son of Alice Linlithku, granted a charter on the sale of a tenement in Berwick-on-Tweed, 1280 and 1290, the charter showing possession by three generations prior to the period mentioned. John de Lithcu rendered to Exchequer the account of his disbursements in connection with the obsequies of King Robert I (ER., I, p. 150). Robert Lithcw, a native of Scotland, had a safe conduct into England, 1440 (Bain, IV, 1143), and William Lithqw was chaplain in Scone, 1480 (Scon, p. 197). Jonete de Linlithgow was spouse of Robert Dicson, 1472 (BNCH., XXIV, p. 89). James Lithgo in Dundee was charged in 1552 with aiding the English (Beats, p. 327), and Robert Lynlytgow was merchant burgess of Glasgow, 1599 (Burgesses). Perhaps the best-known individual of the name was the celebrated traveller William Lithgow of Lanark, whose Rare adventures and painefull peregrinations. in Europe, Asia., and Affrica, was published in 1640.
