LIULF: From Old English personal name Ligiulf from OWSc. Hliolfr or Lifulfr, first evidenced in the Orkneys, c. 1100 (Orkneyinga Saga, p. 193,194). Ligulf de Bebbanburch was one of the witnesses to the charter granting Swintun to the monks of S. Cuthbert, c. 1100 (Lawrie, p. 18). Lyulf filius Uchtredi witnessed Earl David's charter founding the Abbey of Selkirk, A.D. 1120 (Kelso, 1). He is probably the Liiilf son of Uctred who held land near Coldingham before 1136 (Stevenson, Illustrations, p. 13). Uctredus filius Liolfi made a grant of the church of Molle to the Abbey of Kelso between 1147—64 (Kelso, 416). Uchtred's daughter and heiress, the Lady Aeschine of Molle, became the wife of Walter, son of Alan the first Steward of Scotland.
