LIVERANCE: A surname derived from a court office which consisted in delivering food, drink, etc., in the king's household, and specially clothes, hence called liveries (Innes, Legal antiquities, p. 224). The Clerk of the Liverance "shall deal with the king's provisions and make the liverance in the hall and outside to each according to his due" (quotation in Mackinnon, Constitutional history of Scotland p. 126). Galfridus de Liberatione was elected bishop of Dunkeld, 1236 (Dowden, p. 54). An inquest was held in 1259 to inquire into the tenure by which Adam of Liverance held Padvinian (APS., I, p. 98), and Edward of the Liberatione appears in the same document. John Loverans was a witness in Linlithgow in 1531 (Johnsoun, 5), and Alexander Leferans was master of works in Stirling Castle in 1560 (ER., XIX, p. 132—133). Johnne Leverance was minister at Douglas, Lanarkshire, 1574 (RMR.), and another John Liverance was minister at Robbertoun Lanarkshire, in 1624 (Lanark CR.). The surname is now lost in Lawrence.
