(Scandinavian) belonging to Liverpool, A.D. 1190-1230 Liverpul, Leverpol, Litherpol, &c. = (prob.) the Pool of the Slope [Old Norse hlíþar, genit. of hlíþ, a slope + poll-r] If the old pool at Liverpool had been of fresh water instead of salt water there might have been some ground for assum­ing the first element of the name to be that seen in Livermere notwithstanding the antiquity of the forms with Lither- and the contiguity of Litherland.
