(English) belonging to Liversedge (Yorks), the Domesday Livre- sec(h, later Leversege, Liversege.
[The available forms do not help much towards an exact fixation of the etymology: the name can hardly be a combination of the two water-plant names liver or lever (v. under Livermere) and sedge— Old English secg; and the forms are against the assumption (as to the second element) of a derivation from Old English síc, a water-course. If the second element is edge—O.E. ecg—the first may be the Anglo-Saxon pers. name Léofhere. As to the physiography of Liversedge, the township is situated ‘on the declivities of a valley watered by a stream’ (National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland]
Liversedge, a surname now rare in the county, though still represented in Hull, is the name of a township in the West Riding. John Liversege was twice mayor of Hull about five centuries ago (T. H.). Liversage was the name of an old family of Macclesfield, Cheshire, in the 15th century, members of which filled the office of mayor (Earwaker's "East Cheshire").
