(Celtic) usually considered to represent the Welsh llew-eilun, lion-like [llew, lion + eilun, resemblance]; but this origin is not borne out by the form in the Welsh chronicle ‘Brut y Tywysogion’ given below, which rather points to a formation on Welsh llyw, a ruler, leader, (hardly Welsh llywelin, ‘belonging to the horizon’ !) Llew (without an attributive element) was also an Old Welsh pers. name, occur- ing, e.g., in the Mabinogion (‘Math uab Mathonwy’).
