A misspelling of the post-1066 name for Glowesbi in Leicestershire; from glói, a proper noun, masculine, nominitive singular of gloi, glow, an Old Norse male form of glóa, or an Icelandic form of glóði. In Norse mythology this is the name of a 'dwarf'; and bȳ, from the Old Norse, bœr, býr, meaning 'farm' or 'settlement'.

This place has been known by various spellings, including Glowesbi c. 1086 (Domesday), Lousebia c. 1130, Lousebi c. 1184, Louseby 1220s and Lowesby current.
