Lobban Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The surname Lobban seems to be a uniquely Scottish name from northeast Scotland (parishes in Moray, Banff and western Aberdeenshire). It was originally Loban, and possibly the descendants of a Flemish emigrant to Scotland. One branch of this family established in Holland in 1620 and became Laban and one branch that emigrated to the US became Logan. Another branch, also in the US still uses the spelling Loban. The Jamaican Lobbans acquired the name during enslavement, when a Joseph Lobban was a plantation owner there and surnames often reflected those of the owner.

The name Loban also originated in the Scottish Highlands (genetically unrelated) but there gradually changed into Logan. The name Loban also occurs in other countries, most commonly, according to this site, in Belarus.
