Loch Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Perhaps from the loch now known as Portmore Loch in the parish of Eddleston. Some time before 1230 Walterns de Lacu witnessed a charter by Thomas Masculus, dominus de Louchogov, confirming a grant by his grandfather (avus) Radulphus Masculus to the monks of Newbattle (Neubotle, p. 24, 26). Reginald of the Loch renounced his marriage portion and all his prospects in the lands of Eddl'ston between 1214—33 (REG., p. 143), but the family lingered about Peeblesshire at least two hundred years longer. This Reginald of the Lake had acquired possession of Eddleston by his marriage with the daughter of Constantine, who was the son of Adam who was the son of Edulph, the son of Utred (Neubotle, p. 18). Edulfus filius Vtredi obtained the grant of the lands of Gillemorestun, earlier known as Penteiacob, from Ricardus de Moreville, a. 1189 (REG., p. 39). By him the lands were renamed Edulfstun, now Eddleston. His descendants held other lands on the Esk in Lothian under the heirs of the Morevilles (Neubotle, p. 18—24). In 1231 Gillecrist de Lacu was present at perambulation of the boundaries of the lands of Dunduf (RD., p. 111). Monies were allowed Malise de Loghys, a Scots prisoner of war taken at Dunbar Castle in 1296—97 (Bain, II, 742,938), Johannes de Lacu is mentioned in 1317, Ade del Louche was provost of the burgh of Peebles, 1330 (ER., I, p. 274), Thomas de Louch was burgess there in 1448 (Peebles, 6, 14), and John Loch was sergeand of the burgh of Edinburgh, 1473 (REG., 400). Michael de Lacu, prebendary and deacon of the College of Holy Trinity, Edinburgh, 1505—08—11, appears also as Michael Loch (Soltre, p. 84,158, 161). Robert Loche was a notary-public in Edinburgh, 1557 (Laing, 665), and in 1564 a grant of a land near the market-cross of Edinburgh was made to Archibald Loch. David Loch was hanged by the Regent Murray in the raid on Brechin Castle, 1570. John Loch was treasurer of Edinburgh, 1632—33, and George Loch was made a burgess of the burgh in 1729 by right of his father, George Loch of Drylaw (Roll of Edinburgh Burgesses). Mark Loch was provost of burgh of Annan, 1698 (Dumfries), and James Loch published a work on agriculture in 1820. Some of the Lochs who removed to Midlothian acquired there the lands of Drylaw, and others of the name acquired Rachan from the Geddeses in the latter half of the eighteenth century (Buchan, Peeblesshire, II, p. 446).
