LOCHRIG: Of local origin from Lochridge near Stewarton, Ayrshire. In Scots place names rig and ridge are interchangeable. In 1607 Lochrig is referred to as the 11 mere lands of Lochrig, and in 1690 as the 11 mere lands of Lochridge (Retours, Ayr, 95,661). John Lochrig was witness in Kilwinning, 1559 (Laing, 708). The surname appears in the Glasgow Protocol books as Loicnerige (1552) and Loichtrige (1562). Irish pronunciation tends to broaden the 0 in loch and in print this pronunciation is represented by lough, whence Loughridge, the form used by the Scots descendants of the name in Ulster.
