Loewen Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The o and the e are read as an umlaut ö. Loewen means 'lion' in High German and in Low German (Plautdietsch). I am a Mennonite, born in the US whose mother and father were born and raised in Mexico, my grandparents on both sides were born in Canada, and my great- and great-great grandparents were all born in Russia. Many of my aunts and uncles have more recently migrated to countries in South America. Ours is a story of migration, but the high and low German have remained consistent no matter where we've moved. Many of use speak both high and low German, as well as English, Spanish, etc. with Russian words peppering our cuisine terms.
