There are several places named Logan in Scotland, but the surname has probably been derived from Logan in Ayrshire. Robert Logan witnessed resignation of the lands of Ingilbristoun in 1204 (Dryburgh, 163), and other royal charters in the reign of William the Lion, Adam de Logan witnessed charter of land in Gowrie, 1226 (Scon, p. 41). Walter de Logan who was on assize of marches in Fife, 1230, and witnessed a charter by Constantine of Lochow, 1235 (RD., p. 102,196), may be Walter de Logane who witnessed the gift of the mill of Wystoun to the Hospital of Soltre, 1249 (Soltre, p. 30). William Logan, cleric, witnessed confirmation of a charter of Cragin (Craigie) in Kyle to the monks of Paisley, 1272 (RMP., p. 233). Thurbrand de Logan was baron of Grougar in Cunninghame in the same year. Thom de Logy or Logyn witnessed a quitclaim of Beeth-Waldef in Fife, 1278 (RD., p. 52—3). Philippe de Logyn, burgess of Montrose, and Thurbrand de Logyn of Dumfriesshire, rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 198,211). Wautier Logan of Lanarkshire and Andreu de Logan of Wigtownshire also rendered homage (ibid., p. 198). The seal of the former bears a stag's head cabossed, between the antlers a shield with three piles in point, Sigillvm Walteri Logan (Macdonald, 1738). The seal of Andreu bears a figure of S. Andrew, S' Andree de Logen (Bain, II, p. 552). William de Loghyn, a Scots prisoner of war from Dunbar, 1296—7 (ibid., 742,953). John de Logan who held the land of Grugar in Ayrshire, 1304, may be John Logan, one of the king of England's enemies mentioned in 1307 (ibid., p. 425,505). John called Logan had a grant of 18 oxgangs of land, etc., in Lyntounrothryk, 1316 (RHM., I, p. 18). John Logan or de Logan appears as clerk of the royal kitchen, 1328—9 (ER., I, p. 89, 95). Donald Logane was "reidar in the Irische toung" at Creich, Sutherland, in 1569 (OPS., II, p. 685). The last of the Ayrshire family of the name was the witty laird of Logan who sold the estate, and died unmarried in 1802. Loggan 1746, Loghane 1511, Lowgane 1646.
