Lombard Street, London, took its name from being the district in which the Italian merchants resided. It will be seen that several of the instances above hail from the metropolis.
"A native of Lombardy." Antony, a Lombard physician, obtained a grant of the lands of Fulton, Renfrewshire, from Alan, son of Walter, the Steward, a. 1204 (RMP., p. 53). His posterity held these lands under the Stewarts and were surnamed Lombard. In 1272 Sir Antony Lumbard quitclaimed the lands to the monastery of Paisley (ibid., p. 50—51). Lumbard, a layman, was one of those concerned in the mutilation of John, bishop of Caithness, 1202 (CSR., I, p. 3).
